Development 101

International Development Paradigms

Each organization adopts a specific type of development work. Although new breakthroughs are being made each year, general categories can be made to show the differences in development paradigms. These categories are very general and serve to educate individuals on the framework of understanding most organizations adopt.

Dusty Feet is primarily focused on economic development because this avenue allows the organization to involve all paradigms listed.

  1. Water and Sanitation – ensuring the availability of clean safe water, as well as, sufficient water environments: showers, hygiene facilities, toilets, and sewage.
  2. Health and Well Being - provide quality healthcare services and education, based on the needs of the target population. The goal is to allow healthcare access for every person.
  3. Education – focused on providing proper education to all individuals through the organization or by the sponsorship of individuals to attend accredited schools.
  4. Shelter – seeks to provide adequate shelter for families and individuals - methods range depending on the location.
  5. Human Rights - motivated to ensure that all people receive the rights presented by International human rights instruments: gender, age, justice, culture, employment, social welfare, etc.
  6. Economic - concerned with ensuring that all people are able to earn an income, which can sustain an adequate standard of living, without the concession of their human rights or loss of dignity - this is done through the creation of financial systems.
