In one of the great Biblical parables, the tiny mustard seed is contrasted against the rocky terrain; even this portion of faith, we are told, can move mountains. In Greek myth, the gods make their home on the dominating mountaintop of the Grecian landscape – Mt. Olympus; the Greek deities, we are to understand, can flourish only in an environment whose dimensions are proportionate to their own powers and intrigues. Looking at mountains, one experiences the scale of nature, a vastness which threatens a human’s notion of self-importance. These are the epic dimensions of heroic actions, Biblical, mythical dimensions.
Mt. Kilimanjaro thrusts upward some 19,000 plus feet out of an otherwise unremarkable African plain. Seen at a distance, this decrepit volcano reigns over the horizon, offering itself as a worthy adversary to all challengers.
Humankind is challenged by nature, by its scope and disastrous, awe-inspiring phenomena, and standing atop the peak of one of the world’s seven great summits, man beats the challenge back.
Another kind of challenge confronts humanity; this is the danger posed by humankind to itself. According to a United Nations estimate, between 700,000 and 4,000,000 women and children are trafficked around the world for purposes of forced prostitution, labor, and other forms of exploitation every year. Victims of this trade are used for sex tourism, illicit adoptions, pornography, domestic slavery, forced combat, and organ trafficking.
The danger humans pose to themselves is of a more pernicious and ominous category. These challenges are not overcome by isolated acts but require the mobilization of resources and volunteers, the cooperation of citizens and governments, and a collective will towards preventing this victimization.
Dusty Feet’s Conquer Kilimanjaro: Conquer Trafficking campaign offers the opportunity to tackle two challenges: to achieve the summit of Africa’s highest peak and to contribute to the ongoing battle against human trafficking.
Achieve something great.
